Sign Media Canada’s 2023 salary survey results have been published. Yes, that’s the survey I urged you to participate in back in September. It’s a comprehensive results report in the December edition of the magazine, signmedia. Keep in mind though that the results reflect the input of participants and it’s hard to tell to what degree of accuracy the participants reflect the industry as a whole. It’s a must read but, in the meantime, here are some highlights:

  • Nobody under the age of 24 participated. 60% of participants were over 50 years old.
  • 78% of participants were male and 20% female.
  • 64% had been in the industry for longer than 15 years and 45% had been with the same company for more than 15 years.
  • 40% of respondents were owners, 15% in sales, 11% in design, and 11% in fabrication.
  • 75% of respondents earn more than $60,000 per year.
  • 53% have post-secondary education.
  • Benefits include: paid vacations 77%; dental insurance or group plan 56%; paid sick leave 54%; medical insurance 48%; and bonusses 45%.
  • Largest group of respondents came from companies with annual sales of $250,000 to $599.999 (24%). For companies under $250.00 it was only 5%.
  • The major areas of business were: banners 81%; retail signs 76%; dimensional signs 60%; vehicle wraps 56%; architectural signs 56%.
  • Staff sizes of respondents: 1 to 10 staff, 50%; and more than 40 staff, 20%.

It would be perfectly normal to compare yourself and your shop against the results in this survey, but again, keep in mind that you can’t be sure how accurately it represents the industry as a whole.
